Q. |
Why did you chose to attend Drexel University? |
|
My brother attended Drexel in 1998 to study Mechanical Engineering. He encouraged me to come to Drexel because of his satisfaction with the engineering program. There were very few universities in India that offered Biomedical Engineering, and the Drexel program seemed to suite my educational background.

Q. |
What do you like most about the Biomedical Engineering program? |
|
It is a rigorous engineering program. It is multidisciplinary and exposes you to a variety of study areas that are beneficial in completely understanding all aspects of the medical device and pharmaceutical industry. The program is continuously evolving: new courses are continuously being developed in collaboration with other departments.
|
Q. |
What is your concentration area and why did you choose this concentration? |
| |
Biomechanics. The Indian system of education gives you an intense background in math and science. Applying mechanical principles to solving physiological problems interested me. Biomechanics is an interesting hybrid combining courses from the mechanical engineering department with biomed courses.

Q. |
If you have completed a cooperative education experience, where did you work and what were your job duties? |
| |
I worked for a medical device company called Kensey Nash, in their biomaterials department. I assisted biomedical engineers and scientists in developing and improving collagen based orthopedic implants. During another co-op, my job was to make a thorough assessment of the medical equipment in a local hospital in The Gambia and use all available resources to restore as much equipment as possible. I also conducted training sessions for the local staff, instructing them on how to handle, service and calibrate equipment. I also assisted the education committee of the hospital by creating presentations for them to enhance the quality of lecture sessions. In addition, I was invited by the UK based Medical Research Council to spend a few days at their research facility in The Gambia. It is a state of the art facility supporting cutting edge research in tropical diseases and HIV. I was in their biomed workshop where I had the chance to experience some of their lab equipment.

Q. |
What other activities are you currently involved in? |
| |
I am a Resident Assistant and work as an audio/visual technician for Drexel.
|
Q. |
Do you have any future plans? |
| |
After getting some professional experience as an engineer, I would like to pursue a second masters in Public Health and get involved in global health development, working for a non-governmental organization (NGO). The Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions sponsors various health development programs in Philadelphia. I will be involved in one such program this summer.
