Sriram Balasubramanian, PhD joined the faculty in the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems at Drexel University in Fall 2010. Prior to joining Drexel University, he served as a Senior Biomechanics Research Engineer and Co-Director of the Center for Child Injury Prevention Studies at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia since 2006. His research experience includes experimental biomechanics in the areas of pediatric head and neck injury, knee biomechanics following ligament reconstructions, and orthopedic biomechanics of the knee and spine. He has conducted several human volunteer studies, sled tests with post mortem human subjects and experimental studies using cadaveric tissue. His current research efforts include studying the structural characteristics of the pediatric thoracic cage using CT scans and developing an age-equivalent animal model for pediatric long bones. Dr. Balasubramanian mentors several undergraduate and graduate engineering students at Drexel University.
Education:
• PhD, Biomedical Engineering, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, 2006

• MS, Mechanical Engineering, Kettering University, Flint, MI, 2002

• BS, Mechanical Engineering, Regional Engineering College Jalandhar, India, 1999
Active Research Projects:
1. Structural and Material Measures of pediatric human and Immature Porcine Tibia.
2. Age related changes in geometric characteristics of the pediatric thoracic cage.
3. Understanding the geometric characteristics of the spine and thorax in children with scoliosis.
4. Comparison of geometric characteristics of the thorax between pediatric human subjects and pediatric anthropomorphic test devices (Crash test dummies).
5. Development of premature infant Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD).
6. To determine the human kinematics of restrained rear seat occupants in realistic far side impact crash conditions (lateral oblique loading) with a focus on shoulder belt retention and head trajectory and velocity.
