Active Research Projects:
Molecular & cellular mechanisms of the pathogenesis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Bacillus anthracis. Role of the Opa outer membrane protein family in cell association and intracellular survival of N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis. Regulation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) sialylation, and expression of sialyltransferase, in N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis. The role of LPS sialylation in gonococcal and meningococcal virulence. Mechanisms of transport of sialyltransferase to the neisserial outer membrane. The role of Anthrolysin O in the interactions of B. anthracis with macrophages, neutrophils and other human cells. Building a better detector for biodefense and homeland security, focusing on agents of bioterrorism, biowarfare and emerging infectious diseases.
