"Dr. Dov Jaron is elected to the Executive Board of the International Council for Science (ICSU)"

Dr. Dov Jaron, Calhoun Distinguished Professor of Engineering in Medicine in BIOMED, was elected to the Executive Board of the International Council for Science (ICSU). The Board consists of 14 members: six officers of the Council (President, Past President, Vice-President for Scientific Planning and Review, Vice-President for External Relations, Secretary General and Treasurer), four members elected from the National Members of the organization and four members elected from the Scientific Unions.

Founded in 1931, the International Council for Science [www.icsu.org] is a non-governmental organization representing a global membership that includes both national scientific bodies (120 members) and international scientific unions (29 members). Through this international network, ICSU coordinates interdisciplinary research to address major issues of relevance to both science and society. In addition, the Council actively advocates for freedom in the conduct of science, promotes equitable access to scientific data and information, and facilitates science education and capacity building.

Biomedical Engineering is represented in ICSU through the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM). Membership in IUPESM includes the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE). IUPESM encompasses 80 affiliated national member organizations and IFMBE encompasses 50 affiliated national member organizations and 5 trans-national organizations. The United States Biomedical Engineering community is represented in IFMBE through AIMBE.

Dr. Jaron’s election to the Executive Board of ICSU places a Drexel representative at the apex of one of the most prestigious international scientific organizations dealing with interdisciplinary global issues and representing more than 2 million scientists and engineers world-wide. As Board member, Dr. Jaron will work with a Nobel laureate, university rector and members of various science academies. He will also form the link between ICSU and the US National Science Academy (which is a member of ICSU). It should provide considerable prestige and recognition to the university as well as to our biomedical engineering program.

A new ICSU initiatives in which Dr. Jaron has had a major role is "Systems Approach to the Analysis of Health and Well Being in the Changing Urban Environment" This initiative is in the planning process and is expected to become a major ICSU interdisciplinary program.
