Seminar - The Relationship of Nursing and Biomechanical Engineering
Date: April 27, 2012
Time: 4:00 PM
Location: Papadakis Integrated Sciences Building, Room: 120

Speaker(s):
Dawn G. Fratantaro, RN
Exponent
Drexel University

Details:
The investigation of medical records and collaboration between the nurse and engineers is one of the first steps in assisting in the determination of actual patient injuries. The review of these medical records, including pre-incident medical issues, history and specific bodily injuries, is essential to formulate an injury diagram. The engineer utilizes the medical injury information and diagrams at the vehicle or site inspections to determine witness marks in vehicles, obtain an appropriate size surrogate for study, technical analysis, or the use at trial for jury explanation. Other areas in which the nurses are utilized is for medical research of disease processes, especially as it pertains to implantable medical devices and human factors issues, medical equipment used in hospitals or facilities and design patents. One of the essential areas of nursing in an engineering field is to assist in the teaching of nursing and medical protocols and the research of medical illnesses.

Biosketch:
Ms. Fratantaro is responsible for organizing and reviewing patient medical records and other relevant healthcare and legal documents to assess issues of causation and physical damages, and then formulating a summarized index of the analyzed information. Additionally, she researches relevant health care literature, standards, and guidelines and consults with engineers to provide education of medical and healthcare related issues, as well as technical support.

Prior to joining Exponent, Ms. Fratantaro had extensive experience as a pre-hospital care provider/EMT instructor
and nurse in the Emergency Department, as well as the Intensive/Cardiac and Surgical Trauma Care Units. She has also had experience in providing medical record review for a pharmaceutical class-action lawsuit and insurance company underwriting team.
