Dr. Margaret Wheatley
"Interim Provost Ali Houshmand announces new named Drexel professorships."
Dr. Margaret Wheatley, Professor in BIOMED, will become the first recipient of the John M. Reid Professorship when Drexel University officially confers three new named professorships upon three of its most distinguished faculty members at the Convocation ceremony in October 2004. The honor of holding a named professorship should suggest sustained contributions of the first order to one's field. Dr. Wheatley has met that standard, and the Drexel community looks forward to enumerating her particular accomplishments at the Convocation ceremony and counting her among the ranks of Drexel University's outstanding faculty.John M. Reid, Calhoun Chair Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering, is a world renown pioneer of biomedical ultrasound imaging whose innovation paved the way to one of the most important technological breakthroughs in health care, resulting in the pervasive use of biomedical ultrasound as a safe, effective, non-invasive, and affordable life saving biomedical imaging modality. The newly established Professorship will institutionalize Professor Reid's contributions to biomedical ultrasound and his leadership in affirming Drexel's highly regarded status as a center of excellence in biomedical ultrasound. Among many other prominent leaders in biomedical ultrasound, Professor Reid has been a mentor to Professor Wheatley who will serve as the first John M. Reid Professor. Following in the foot steps of Dr. Reid, Dr. Wheatley is not only an outstanding researcher and technology innovator in ultrasound contrast agents and drug delivery but also a mentor par excellence whose students have been sweeping awards both at Drexel and nationally. Notably, her students have won the Baiada Entrepreneurship Award two years in a row, as well as the College of Engineering Senior Design Competition. To honor, to celebrate, and to continue this legacy of scholarship and innovation, the following awards and activities have been announced: - John M. Reid Innovation Prize in Biomedical Technologies: This prize will be awarded annually to a student-developed technology innovation that holds the potential to impact health care in a significant way. The first prizes will be awarded at the upcoming Commencement exercises in June 2004. The selection committee will judge nominations in three categories: freshmen design, senior design, and graduate design / theses. Please stay tuned for the specifics of this prize and the nomination procedure and deadline.
- John M. Reid Scholarships in Biomedical Engineering: These scholarships will be awarded to undergraduate biomedical engineering students who demonstrate their ability and commitment to the development of novel biomedical technologies. This program will go in effect during the 2004 academic year.
- John M. Reid Seminar Series in Biomedical Ultrasound and Imaging: This series was kicked off on February 17, 2004 by a seminar on "Ultrasound-Assisted Thrombolysis for Stroke Therapy" by Dr. Christy Holland of the University of Cincinnati.
