Urinary tract infections, or UTIs, are a serious health problem affecting millions of people each year. They result in more than 8 million office visits* and over a million hospitalizations annually. The total cost for treatment reaches into the billions of dollars. However, a novel electrochemical biosensor has the potential to reduce costs because it eliminates the customary 48-hour wait to identify urinary bacteria. Relying on molecular analysis, the biosensor detects bacteria in just 45 minutes. Quick detection should result in more effective drug treatment and reduce the number of drug-resistant bacteria.
