Homeland Security Technologies
In 2000, Drexel University received a congressional designation as the National Bioterrorism Civilian Medical Response Center (CIMERC). CIMERC is a university-based, pre-planning organization for biological mass casualty preparedness. Since its inception, CIMERC and Saint Francis University's Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA), its principal partner, have been working to develop a demonstration test-bed for innovative biodefense technologies related to civilian preparedness and crisis response. CIMERC continues to develop a comprehensive regional biodefense response model (incorporating both urban and rural community test-beds) that enables an effective and coordinated response by the civilian community to the earliest stages of biological terrorist attacks through the use of advanced Command and Control technologies. In addition to CERMUSA, CIMERC has partnered with many city and regional governmental and non-governmental organizations including the School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems in determining the research and technology transfer that will ensure an effective integrated response.
